Code Credential Definition
Tier 1 - High School Diploma Producing Programs
Note: All NPS Tier 1 applicants must be administered the TAPAS.
109 Currently in High School

Definition: An individual currently in high school who is not yet a high school senior. This includes Adult Alternative, Online high school and Home School (Covered Grads).

Required Verification: ARNG High School Letter specifying applicant is a junior, beginning and last day of current year classes, first day of next year classes and projected graduation date. Permission to ship early and/or return late must be on ARNG High School Letter. Letter must be signed by parent/guardian if applicant is under 18 years old.

GCs will validate school Tier/DoD Ed Code and select Recruiting Program Code "CG" for all DoD Ed Code 7, B, and H applicants.

Note: IAW AOC Para 5-63, The Split Training Option (STO) is the only authorized training option for CIHSJR (Currently in High School Junior). STO applicant must enter IADT (Phase I) within 270 days of enlistment. Waivers or exceptions to this requirement are not authorized.

Note: IAW AOC Para 2-16, 6x2 is the minimum enlistment period for individuals enlisting for the 270-day delay for CIHSJR, Split Training Option (STO).

Note: IAW AOC Para 2-8, CIHSJR who are a TSC IV (AFQT 16-30) are ineligible to enlist in the ARNG.

11S High School Senior

Definition: An individual attending high school, who completed the junior year and is a high school senior. This includes Adult Alternative, Online high school and Home School (Covered Grads).

Required Verification: ARNG High School Letter indicating applicant is a senior and projected date of graduation, which must be within 365 days. Letter must be signed by parent/guardian if applicant is under 18 years old.

For 14 month seniors, when open: must have a HS letter stating that the applicant is in good standing and on track to complete all requirements of his or her Junior year and upon completion of the Junior year will be classified as a SY XX Senior. For midterm graduates; must have a letter stating the applicant is currently enrolled and in good standing will be classified as High school graduate upon completion of all required courses. The letter will also state the end date of the Junior year, beginning and expected graduation date.

GCs will validate school Tier/DoD Ed Code and select Recruiting Program Code "CG" for all DoD Ed Code 7, B, and H applicants.

11M Currently Enrolled, Other Than a High School Diploma

Definition: An individual who is currently enrolled and attending class in a Tier 1 category (credential) other than a High School Diploma and has a Tier 2 credential.

Required Verification: Letter of enrollment from college or telephonic memorandum verifying applicant is currently enrolled, attending, and verifying number of quarter/semester hours for which enrolled.

Note: Job Corp applicants who have met the required criteria will be coded as 11M while attending (minimum of 60 days) and 128 upon completion of the program.

12L High School Diploma

Definition: A diploma issued to an individual who completed a 12-year "traditional" graded (credit-based) day program of classroom instruction. The diploma must be issued from the high school where the individual completed the requirements for graduation.

Required Verification: HS diploma or certified transcripts showing actual date of graduation.

Diploma Not Yet Issued: AR 601-210 Para 2-7.

Failed Exit Exam: AR 601-210 Para 2-7.

Telephonic Verification: AR 601-210 Para 2-7.

128 Completed One Semester of College

Definition: A non-high school diploma graduate who attended and completed 15 semester hours of college credit or 22 quarter hours of college credit or 675 clock hours of classroom instruction from an accredited post-secondary institution. Credit earned through testing, adult education, assessment, military training or high school equivalency preparation is not applicable. This includes Job Corps operated by the Department of Labor.

Required Verification: Certified transcripts verifying number of clock, quarter, or semester hours completed. Job Corps applicants must provide verification of program completion of 675 hours signed by center director and training director, as well as GED or other Tier 2 credential. Refer to AR 601-210 Para 2-7 for additional information on clock hours.

Note: Job Corp applicants who have met the required criteria will be coded as 11M while attending (minimum of 60 days) and 128 upon completion of the program.

D Associate Degree A certificate conferred upon completion of a 2-year program at a community college, university, or degree-producing technical institute.
G Professional Nursing A certificate conferred upon completion of a 3-year hospital school of nursing program.
K Baccalaureate Degree A certificate conferred upon completion of a 4-year college program other than a first professional degree.
N Master's Degree A certificate conferred upon completion of additional academic requirements beyond the baccalaureate or first professional degree but below the doctorate level.
R Post Master's Degree A certificate conferred upon completion of additional academic requirements beyond the master degree level but below the doctorate level.
U Doctorate Degree A certificate conferred in recognition of the highest academic achievement within an academic field, excluding honorary degrees and first professional degrees.
W First Professional Degree A certificate conferred upon completion of the academic requirement for the first degrees awarded in selected professions: Architecture, certified public accountant, chiropody or podiatry (D.S.C. or POD.D), dentistry (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), medicine (M.D.), optometry (O.D.), osteopathy (D.O.), pharmacy, veterinary medicine, law (L.L.B. or J.D.), and theology (B.D.), rabbi, or other first professional degree.
Tier 1 - Covered Graduates (Non-Traditional)
12B Adult / Alternative Diploma

Definition: A diploma issued to a graduate of a public or private non-traditional school using alternative methods of instruction to complete graduation requirements based on state law (i.e., alternative, accelerated, or high school completion programs). The Army will accept a diploma issued from an institution (attendance based) that is state/local government education agency approved, or accredited by one of the accrediting organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Required Verification: HS diploma issued from an institution which is listed as Adult/Alternative HS in HSS-FAZR. The applicant’s education credentials must be reviewed, as needed, by authorized personnel IAW AOC Para 2-7.

127 Virtual / Distance School Diploma

Definition: A diploma awarded upon completion of an accredited Home Study, Distance Learning, Independent Study, Self-Study, Correspondence School, Cyber School or Virtual Learning Program. The Army will accept a diploma issued from an institution that is either state/local government education agency approved, accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) or accredited by one of the accrediting organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Required Verification: HS diploma issued from an institution which is listed as Virtual/Distance School in HSS-FAZR. The applicant’s education credentials must be reviewed, as needed, by authorized personnel IAW AOC Para 2-7.

12H Home School Diploma

Definition: A diploma issued to a graduate of a home school program in accordance with state requirement, administered by a parent, teacher/school district, or umbrella association. Applicants must provide a diploma or certificate and transcripts indicating the individual completed four years of a high school curriculum. Transcripts must reflect successful completion of the last 9 academic months of continuous schooling from the home school umbrella association or parent issuing the diploma. The curriculum must involve parental instruction, supervision and should closely pattern subjects used in traditional high schools.

Required Verification: HS Diploma/Certificate and transcripts confirming four years attendance and graduation IAW state requirements. The ARNG Recruiting BN XO or Operations Officer is the primary evaluating official for any required tier evaluations IAW AOC Para 2-7.

Tier 2 - Alternate High School Credentials
Note: All NPS Tier 2 applicants must be administered the TAPAS.
11E Test-Based Equivalency Diploma

Definition: A diploma or certificate of General Education Development (GED) or other test-based credential. A state or locally issued secondary school diploma obtained solely on the basis or testing and not graded day coursework.

Required Verification: General Education Diploma or certificate. Note: Must be 18+ years old IAW AR 601-210 Para 2-7d. Required to have been withdrawn from high school at least six months prior to the date of application for enlistment IAW SMOM 17-017.

12X National Guard Youth Challenge Program

Definition: An individual who completed a 22 week National Guard Youth Challenge Program (NGYCP) and passed the GED. Must be identified separately from other GED holders.

Required Verification: National Guard Youth Challenge Certificate and GED. Note: Must be 18+ years old IAW AR 601-210 Para 2-7d.

12C Occupational Program

Definition: Certificate received for completing a 6-month vocational-technical program and a minimum of 11 years of secondary education.

Required Verification: No information from AOC. No further information provided by AR 601-210 para 2-7d(1).

12J High School Certificate of Attendance, Completion or Special Education

Definition: An attendance-based high school certificate issued to students based on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that involves community experiences, employment, training, daily living skills and post-school transition skills which differ from the traditional high school graduation requirements.

Required Verification: HS Certificate of Attendance or Credential verifying completion of Individual Education Program. Note: Must be 18+ years old IAW AR 601-210 Para 2-7d. Required to have been withdrawn from high school at least six months prior to the date of application for enlistment IAW SMOM 17-017.

Tier 3 - Less Than High School Diploma
1 Less than High School Diploma or Credential An individual who is not currently in a secondary education program and has no diploma/credential.

a. All NPS applicants are required to take the TAPAS. SASVAB and MET Site testers are not exempt from this requirement.

b. Effective 20 January 2017, TAPAS scores will be discontinued for one year as a screen for applicants seeking enlistment in the US Army. Otherwise qualified applicants who were previously disqualified from enlistment due to their TAPAS score are now eligible to be considered for enlistment.

c. TAPAS will be administered to Prior Service (PS) and Glossary Non-Prior Service (GNPS) who were separated for adverse reasons (involuntary discharge). PS applicants who are required to take the TAPAS must meet education Tier 1 or Tier 2 screening requirements. The Tier level will be determined by the individual's education credential.

Note: TAPAS is valid for two years.
